Blitz Streak Broken

Camberwell Blitz  4 lost to Caulfield  11

Playing the third-placed Caulfield the Blitz were always going to be in for a tough day.  The opening ten minutes was an arm wrestle with neither side scoring as the ball reversed up and down the field.  Frank McKenna made two great saves in goal and Liam Campbell broke up a number of Caulfield thrusts with strong body groundballs and determined running.  Unfortunately the Blitz could not sustain the pressure and gave up three goals to finish the quarter 0-3.

Caulfield started the second period strongly with two slick goals but the Blitz fought back with  Falconer-Boag bagging two on behind -goal dodging plays and Ned McKenna finding the net with a strong low shot.

Starting the second half 7-3 down the Wells needed tight defense but couldn't hold the big Caulfield midfielders.  Ashby was plucky in the face-off and around the ground and Gale was holding his opponent well plus winning some great groundballs.  Whelen almost scored with a flying outside shot and Barber worked close on a dodging play but was foiled by the goalkeeper.  With Frank McKenna outstanding in the goal, the Blitz held Caulfield to a 1-all final quarter in their best display of defensive play all season.

Scorers:  Falconer -Boag 2, N. McKenna 2

Best:    Falconer-Boag, Campbell, Bigaignon, Ashby, F. McKenna
