Match report for Sat. 18-Jul

Under 11

Camberwell  8  drew with Eltham Russell  8

In an exciting, cliffhanger game the Wells gave up a first half lead to hang on for a draw against Eltham Russell.  It was a thrilling game with the ball transferring from end to end and plenty of strong ground ball contests and great intercepts.

Varick Boyd opened strongly in attack to post early goals with McKenna, Gale and Tubb also scoring to give Camberwell a 5-3 lead at the quarter break. Mc Kenna took over in attack and was getting plenty of action but kept being frustrated by some good goalkeeping from Eltham.  Gale and Minto-Barnett  goaled on assists from Barber to keep Camberwell at a 7-4 halftime lead.  Angus Ashby made a number of telling saves as goalkeeper and Rupert Grant was working overtime in defense to repel  Eltham advances.

In the second half our boys had the majority of the play but too many shots on goal were poorly directed and Eltham outscored us to bring the game to 8-7  with a quarter to play.  Zac Bigaignon saved multiple Eltham shots to keep Camberwell in the game as Eltham threw everything at overhauling the deficit.  When Edward Whelen got free on a pass from Ashby to cleverly roll the ball into the goal the game looked secure for Camberwell but the goal was disallowed on the one pass rule and Eltham took it upfield to score and tie the game.
