Australian Honour for Camberwell Past-Player and Coach
Our own Graeme Ross has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the Australian Honors announced today by the Australian Government.
After a brilliant playing career as an attack-midfield at Melbourne University and Caulfield clubs in the 1960’s and 70’s, Graeme transferred to Camberwell, played as a senior player, and coached the Under 15 premiership team in 1987 and the U17 premiership team in 1989. He subsequently coached our State League Team from 1993-97 and from 1999-2003.
Several Camberwell players also played under Graeme during the three campaigns which he led as Head Coach for the Australian Under 19 Team for the World Championships between 1991-99, winning two silver medals and elevating Australia’s world ranking..
Graeme’s playing nickname was ‘Rocket’ in recognition of his exceptional speed. In his own playing career, he was selected in five Victorian State Teams (1967,70,71,74 and 75) and in the Australian Team which competed against the visiting USA ‘Lancers’ Team in 1970.
As is often the case, we often know little about our colleagues’ lives outside of lacrosse.
Graeme completed a Doctorate in the Department of Science at Monash University in 1977 and went on to use his mathematical skills to develop air pollution modelling techniques and use them in a variety of research and community benefit projects and developments. He spent time as a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Monash University and as Associate Dean.
Graeme recently celebrated his 80th birthday. His wife, Margaret, is keen for him to retire from work but he continues to run his consultancy business in Air Pollution Modelling & Meteorology and takes on important environmental projects.
Congratulations Graeme on your OAM – the Camberwell Lacrosse Club members thank you for your contributions to our club and lacrosse in general and applaud you for this well-deserved acknowledgement.
