Pipped but still history making
The eagerly awaited State League 1st v 2nd match on Saturday between Camberwell and Footscray fell agonizingly short of our hopes.
It was a contest of high skill, great speed and a drama-filled conclusion.
The Wells had trailed by 8 goals to 4 at half-time but fought back gallantly to be even at 9-9 with less than a minute to play. Coach Murphy called a time-out to lay out the game plan for a winning goal. The plan came close but was not quite there. A deflected shot was quickly rebounded by Footscray with a superb fast break to goal and clinch the game with a few seconds left on the time clock. Goal-scorers for Camberwell were Mizrahi 3, Lander 2, Easson 2, De Stefano and Kerr.
There was exhausted disappointment on the Camberwell faces but the boys can hold their heads high. They may not have realized it but the team had created history this year for Camberwell by heading the State League table with 7 straight wins, the best ever achieved since the club was formed 90 years ago.
Prior to the current year, Camberwell's previous best performances in the premier league were a second placing, Grand Final loss to the powerhouse Malvern team in 1939 and overall third placings in 1993 and 1994.
The second half of the 2017 season now beckons and the best wishes of all Camberwell supporters are with the team. They have shown that they are worthy contenders.
